east coast school vs. west coast school

It was about this time last year that I was a woman of few words.  Once again I am a woman of few words, albeit for much different, much better reasons.

I had thought that the adventure started once I finished my applications and sent off my fees.  That only goes to show what I know.  Now the adventure starts, namely, how in the world am I going to pay for this?  (There are options, of course, but I dare not disclose them for fear of hexing them.  There are also four other schools from which to hear; out of the same fear of hexing, I am being cagey about them.)

Of course, I have the rest of the spring and summer to figure out how I’m going to pay for this.  Today I can read and reread these letters, and be thankful that the word “regret” does not occur in either of them.  I can’t think of a better way to spend the day than that.

What else is there to say but, “Congratulations!!!”

Hee hee hee.  Something like ‘mouse I am thinking.  I am so glad to get to wear an unstoppable, cat-and-canary, unprintable-eating sort of grin, I mean I just can’t wipe it off, and it’s all in your honor.  Now I knew that were I the dean of admissions at any law school in the country I would have bent over backwards to recruit you, to make you welcome, to give you a map to every natural foods store and farmers’ market within five miles, anything it took, to see you say yes, but then, I know you well enough to be confident of your conscientiousness, of your fine--even debilitating at times--ability to consider and weigh arguments, to think to think, but to think without abrogating your common sensical soul.  In any case, I am glad that at least some law schools’ admissions departments are as good at judging character as am I. smile I am glad you are enjoying the moment, it is only the right thing to do.  Congratulations.  BTW, this week, I intend to make that chocolate gateau.  I was going to last week, but forgot to add its constituents to my list when I went shopping, so.

Wow.

Owen on 03/15/08 at 06:13 PM

Oops, I meant by, “at least some law schools,” the ones that have gotten back to you.  Sheesh.  Nothing about leasts.  I should be more careful when typing with furious excitement and good wishes.  Also, what’s the matter with me tonight, “Wow” refers to my continuing giddiness about your non-regretful letters, not my rather pedestrian intent to make a chocholate bomb.

Owen on 03/15/08 at 06:18 PM

Oh, Jen!  Congratulations!  How unbelievably wonderful.  I’m so happy for you!

If you can, picture me giggling inanely, jumping up and down, pausing suddenly, grabbing you and giving you one of those energetic, squiggly and, above all, happy hugs.

The world is now officially a better place.

You did it!

Dear one.  My heart is very full of good things and my mind is full of good thoughts, and all of it is about you and due to you.  Of course there’s that selfish nagging thought that you might go live somewhere far away, but I suppose I’ll have to manage (said in my best Eeyore tone of voice).

The important thing right now is celebration.  When, where, how...you name it, I’m there, making the potch and the brandy broth, baking the torte (or is that torts now?), mixing up the rum punch...or just ordering the hot wings and the next round.

Such WONDERFUL news. I’m so very proud of you, first from rising from your funk of last year, and then getting into Northeastern, the very University where I taught for so many years. Congratulations, and whatever school you choose, know that your internet friends are rooting for you every step of the way!

Congratulations!!!!!

Wonderful! What a great feeling, eh, to suddenly have options and all of them good.

I will say this: had I thought to check out the food shopping situation near the grad schools I was considering, I might have chosen differently. I know you have to choose the right school for you but it’s heartbreaking to move so far from home and then not be able to find the foods you love.

Jodi on 03/15/08 at 08:51 PM

jen.  very well done.  of course any law school in this entire country would be very lucky to have you.  damn lucky.  so i’m glad that these two have had the foresight to send you a letter of acceptance and not risk NOT having you.

i really do hope that you’ve spent this day celebrating and basking in this absolute wonderful accomplishment.

i’m so proud of you i feel like i’m the one who got accepted.  can i go with you?  i’m not doing anything and i take very good notes.  it would give me something wonderful to do!

This is WONDERFUL news!!!  Congratulations!!!!

Cynthia on 03/16/08 at 11:41 AM

Congratulations! Of course, we had no doubts. Have you any idea which one you’ll pick?

My, what beautiful weather we are having today! The air is crisp and cool ... we’re due for a little rain but not too much ... It’s a mild spring here in Northern California, much like our winters - mild and comfortable. It doesn’t snow right here, but of course you can drive to Lake Tahoe and see all the snow you want in wintertime. I don’t know why I mention it right at this time. Hmm.

pam on 03/16/08 at 12:00 PM

*doing a happy dance* - CONGRATULATIONS JEN! Awesome!

ZarahMaria on 03/16/08 at 06:32 PM

Is there a synonym for CONGRATULATIONS?

. . . some splendid word which combines exhilaration, joy, pats on the back, and an acknowledgment of the courage it took to go back to the LSAT—not to mention the effort of pouring your heart and soul into “please let me in, I’ll be a great law student” papers.

I’ve come in very late in this story, but nevertheless, I still feel extremely happy for you.  See, it’s true; life does begin at 40!

Beth on 03/16/08 at 07:06 PM

rock ON with your righteous self!

Congratulations! Fab news. And thank you for your comment over at mine - I’ve been popping in now and then to see how you’re getting on, and it’s nice to know you’re doing likewise. smile

Emphatic congratulations, but where’s the acceptance letter from Duke?

PS: my encrypted anti-spam word was ‘further’.

Lee Ann on 03/17/08 at 10:07 PM

I remember when I did that, applied for three different things, chef training, accountant, hair dressing.  Weird range I know, but all my kids were finally in school and I wanted to get back into the swing of life, and wanted something that was easily transportable and couldn’t figure out what to do.  So I paid my fees in July and was told that I would be put on a looooong waiting list, maybe I’d hear about something in about a year.  Fine maybe I’d make up my mind by then.  Went on holidays for two weeks.  Came home to a ringing phone....The school was trying to fill a spot due to a cancelation and would I be interested.  Sure...by the way what’s the coarse?  Chef. Why not - I’ll be there in August.  That was in 1992.  I’ve since become a bookkeeper, but only because of an injury three years ago that prevents me from cooking in a commercial kitchen.  Good Luck sometimes you just have to put yourself out there.  I hope you continue your blog about going back to school.

kathy on 03/17/08 at 11:09 PM

Most excellent.  Congrats, baby.

More and more congratlations!

As you wait to decide your future, perhaps you don’t mind catching us up on your life so far?

I’ve tagged you!  See me for the directions.  It would be great if you could work baking in, somehow.

Beth on 03/20/08 at 08:18 PM

Shauna linked me over here...every diverse interests you have!

Go to the BEST school you can afford. NorthEastern will do you much better than Santa Clara.

Your future career and how much you make is determined as much by your degree(s) as by WHICH school you chose and WHO you came to know.

A regional school (like SCU) works best if you want to stay near Santa Clara, or be in a more social service legal program. Outside of that part of the Bay area, your SCU degree may not be a great calling card.

Hope it helps. Its one of those truths that the years have taught me.
