It’s not as kinky as it sounds, dear friends.  Showing the superb taste and judgment that has made him The Boy for Me since 1992, Lloyd took me to Mystic for four days to celebrate our wedding anniversary.  I knew we’d have a good time, mostly based on the happy sighs of our friends and relatives who have been to Mystic, but even knowing that I was in for a good time, I had no idea just how much I would love it up there, or how difficult it would be to return to our cramped, noisy, quotidian corner of the world.

There is much I want to say about this splendid week, more than I have in me to say now, focused as I am on the prospect of returning to the box factory tomorrow, and surviving the next three weeks, which I already know are going to be painful and difficult, even by the normal box factory standard.  I promise, dear friends, that I will share properly, but in the meantime, I can say that there was more to our visit than picturesque landscapes and drawbridge geekery.  There was also print geekery, in the form of the nifty linotype machine Lloyd and I found in a used bookstore:

linotype heaven

There were also swell and imaginative Halloween lawn fixtures:

There was retail therapy, including two bookstore runs, two trips to a large and sublime health food supermarket, and a trip to this shop, where I bought these:

There might have even been a nice meal or two.  Or ten.  wink

Oh, Happy Anniversary, Bakes.

Wow! What a great trip--everything New England has to offer--Mystic, sailboats, water, ‘ersters and yarn.  Can’t wait to hear about it.

It is hard to come back to our particular reality—but here and now may also be concealing some pleasures.  Dadblastitall, though, do they have to be SO concealed?  Know this much, at least—2 bags of Sir Lancelot high-gluten flour await you and our next excursion…

Happy Anniversary, Jen!  I love Mystic.  Did you have THE pizza?  Yum!

A lot of people from Mystic say the pizza sucks, but I have been a few times and really liked it! (and, guiltily, will mention that I love the movie).

Just came across this blog and think it’s great!

The flamingo skeleton is a true classic. If I were still in the states, I’d probably order a few for my lawn this Halloween.

Three years ago next month, my new boyfriend took me to Mystic on our first weekend away. We posed for a picture in front of that same drawbridge. We got married just over a month ago, in NYC, and now we are living in beautiful California. I have always loved your nom de blog for your husband, because on our first trip to Seattle my guy took me to the 7-11 where Lloyd Dobler steered Diane Court away from the broken glass. No reason for me to blather on about my own life on your blog except that I love your tales and your recipes. And when you have a job that wears you down, as I did until just over a month ago, know that things can and will get better!

Years ago we visited Mystic Seaport and were enchanted. We went to nearby Strawberry Bankes, where there were more restaurants in a square block than in my entire town! I hope to take my kids to New England soon to see how beautiful it is!

I was born in New London, CT, my Dad was born in Old Mystic.  We live in Texas but every summer we would travel the 1900 miles to Old Mystic to visit all the family.  Love it there.....love your site!
