Tvindy, I don’t *think* there’s a joke, but our Bakerina is using another snippet of a song lyric as a post title. Is that telephone office in Eureka Springs, Jen?
Very astute of the lovely Kimberly! The lyric comes from “South Central Rain” by R.E.M, from the 1985 album Reckoning, which was a fixture on my stereo in college. (It’s the song that starts “Did you never call, I waited for your call...") And yes, this is another picture from Eureka Springs. It’s actually a general store, or was. The building was built in 1880 and sits at the top of Singleton Street. Every time I walked by it I thought “what a great space for a bakery!” but alas, even though it is no longer a store, somebody has plans for it, because it is covered with “Private Property” signs. Dagnabbit.
I’m amazed that you can decipher the lyrics to any of those early REM records (the only lyric I can actually perceive from that song is “I’m sorry")...I used to half-think that Michael Stipe was doing a Liz Fraser/Cocteau Twins nonsense scat thing.
My hands-down, alltime favorite dj, David Wisdom, who had the singularly most brilliant radio show ever (Nightlines, on the CBC) had a “Cocteau Twins Lyric Contest” one weekend, and solicited entries from people to send in their interpretation of a CT song, and then read them on the air. It was genius. Every Saturday night he’d play “Ten singles in alphabetical order” from his own massive collection of 45s. It took him about twelve years to get to the end.
Oh, I would have loved to have heard that Cocteau Twins contest. When I upgraded my copy of Treasure from vinyl to CD, I had high hopes of finally deciphering, if not all the lyrics, at least *something*. I have since decided that Elisabeth sings in a language that only she speaks. Which, is fine, really, because the music is so pretty, and so is she.
As far as old R.E.M. goes, if I could decipher one line per song, that was a pretty good day for me. I still think that the last line of each verse of “Sitting Still” is “We will gather, throw up beer.”
this pic reveals that you are a country girl at heart. now get your bod out of the big apple, you, come home to eureka springs, we’re the ones who love you best.
(oh and any chance you can email that rem song? i love music that has lyrics in it, that’s such a cool thing.)
what? all obscure rem lyrics aside: are we all just going to ignore the address here? sheesh.
Collena’s right. The picture is a little over from 34. About 34.5 in fact. Which we all know is 1/2 of 69. (Sheesh.) Kids nowadays. Why do we have to spell everything out for them.
Bakerina must be feelin’ lonely. Lloyd, get to work.

I know there’s a joke in there somewhere, but I must be too young to get it.
