"Attention, ladies and gentlemen," said the no-nonsense female voice on the PA system on the N train. This is never a good thing to hear, especially during the morning rush hour, as the sentence that invariably follows is "Due to [signal problems/a stuck door/something on fire] at the [major transfer point for at least four lines] station, the last stop on this train will be the [station that has no transfer points to any of the lines that will take you to your office] station." Imagine my surprise when the voice, which I realized belonged to the driver and not the conductor, continued:
Attention, ladies and gentlemen. To the person with the string: That was not brilliant. There are thousands of lives on this train. Please, please, do not do that again.
The doors closed and we proceeded to Broadway without further comment from the driver or conductor. This is probably just as well, because I'm not entirely sure that I want to know how an entire train of us could be taken out by string.
Happy Halloween, dear friends.
